The History of Fort Myers Beach

The history of Fort Myers Beach is a long and complicated one. In the early 1900s, a series of hurricanes came through and completely destroyed the town. People deserted the area for a while, but eventually returned to rebuild. It was in 1926 that this settlement officially became known as Fort Myers Beach.

In 1905, a hurricane swept through and wiped out all of the structures in the area, leaving only the church standing. The land was sold to developers from Ohio who then developed it into a residential community with lots on sale for $300 each. The town officially became known as Fort Myers Beach in 1926 when it was incorporated following its rebirth from destruction after Hurricane Wilma hit in 2005.
